Home Projects That You Should Not DIY

Many homeowners prefer to DIY home repairs and home improvements whenever possible, hoping to save cash and get that sense of fulfillment when they finish the project. While there’s nothing wrong with DIYs in general, it should be noted that some tasks should be left to the experts. These tasks are those that require special tools, equipment, and training. And if you don’t have any of those, you could be putting yourself at risk and you may have to redo the job in the near future, costing you more money. In this blog, we have rounded up the home projects that you should not DIY.

1. Plumbing

Perhaps except for simple tasks like showerhead or tap replacement, many plumbing jobs should be done by a professional and licensed plumber. More complex tasks such as tackling leaks, pipe repairs, pipe replacements, sewer repair, low-pressure issues, etc. are best left to the experts. An untrained eye can only see the tip of the iceberg and can only provide a band-aid solution. On the other hand, a trained and experienced plumber can help discover the underlying cause of the issue and provide efficient and effective solutions that will last. Aside from determining the main problem, they can also check the rest of your plumbing system to prevent future issues and ensure your property is up to code.

2. Electrical

Electricity is vital in our day to day lives, but it can also be extremely dangerous. When mishandled, electricity can cause electrical shocks, fires, and property damage–all major concerns.  If your circuit breakers keep tripping, fuses keep blowing, or your lights keep flickering, do not attempt to solve the problem on your own. These problems can mean there’s a more complicated problem going on, so have an expert take a look at your electrical system. Sure, there are hundreds of tutorial videos and instructions you can find online, but a poorly done electrical job may cause the system to fail later on, requiring additional work to rectify the problem and more money. Not to mention, an incorrectly done electrical work may cause further malfunctions, and according to the U.S. Fire Administration, electrical malfunction was one of the top leading causes of fires every year from 2007 to 2016. Additionally, if you have a professional do the electrical work, you’ll rest assured that your property is up to code. So if you need electrical installation, repair, or maintenance, don’t risk it! Call a professional (unless you only need to change a bulb).

3. Roofing

Small roof repairs are okay to DIY, right? They’re simple and you only need a kit which you can buy from the hardware store. Not quite. A simple repair can actually cost way more money down the line. To effectively repair a roofing leak, for example, you will need to determine the trouble spot and also replace the components without causing additional damage. A cheap, amateur work can only cause further damage and more work to do, costing you more. Additionally, roofing work needs the right kind of safety gear and equipment, so if you do not have this and the right training, do not attempt to DIY a roofing task.

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home. It protects you and everything else inside your home from the elements, so it’s only practical to invest in professional roofing services when you need repair, replacement, or installation.

4. HVAC

Your HVAC system is composed of several parts so it is important to only let a qualified technician who knows the system well do the repairs or installation. With the right equipment and tools designed for the job, a professional will get the job right the first time. They will also be able to diagnose the main issue and other potential issues and make suggestions. So if you need HVAC or plumbing services, a professional technician can help your system run as efficiently as possible.

There’s a reason why plumbers, roofers, and electricians go through extensive training and certification. Their jobs are not easy and the scope of work is complex.
